Richard Murphy began his 36 year career in education as a teacher and coach at Carnage Junior High School and Broughton High School. After earning distinction in these roles, Richard served as principal for East Wake High and Sanderson High Schools. In 1993, he became the first principal of Leesville Road High School.
During his tenure as a school administrator, Richard served as a president and member of the Board of Directors for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. Richard’s leadership and influence benefited all WCPSS high schools through his work as Senior Director for high school programs.
He was an extraordinary mentor to his coworkers and inspired many students to enter the education profession. Richard, who passed away in March 2011, is being honored posthumously for his service to Wake County Public School System and his continuing influence on it today.
