Doug McMillan, a Raleigh native, started working for the YMCA of the Triangle’s Camp Seafarer when he was in high school. McMillan graduated from Wake Forest University in 1973. In 1980, he started working full time for the YMCA of the Triangle, primarily in youth programming. In 1993, he became the CEO of the Association.
McMillan has led the YMCA through significant growth and service to the region. During McMillan’s tenure, the YMCA has grown to be among the 13 largest YMCAs in the nation serving more than 130,000 children, families and adults at 18 branches and three overnight camps.
Under McMillan’s leadership, the Capital Area YMCA merged with the YMCA of Greater Durham to create the YMCA of the Triangle in 2002. In 2014, the YMCA of the Triangle merged with the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA. Today, the YMCA of the Triangle’s operating budget is nearly $80 million. The YMCA of the Triangle’s Annual Campaign, which launched in 1993, has grown to more than $7.4 million.
McMillan credits the success of the YMCA of the Triangle to dedicated staff and volunteers. Today, he leads a full-time staff of 400 and a part-time staff of 3,000. In 2016, more than 10,500 YMCA volunteers logged more than 150,000 hours of service to our community.
In April 2016, Doug McMillan was honored by the Triangle Business Journal as one of the top CEOs in the region. Honorees were chosen by area leaders and CEOs for steering their organizations to success and making the Triangle a better place to live.
Doug McMillan and his wife Jo Anna share a strong commitment to public schools in North Carolina. Prior to his employment at the YMCA, Doug served as a junior high school teacher in Washington, NC. Jo Anna served as PTA president of Stough Elementary School and as a PTA volunteer at Daniels Middle School and Broughton High School. The McMillans have five children, all of whom attended Wake County Public Schools.
Doug McMillan was awarded the Vernon Malone Friend of Education Award in 2017.
